The Met Office has identified eight areas across the UK that are likely to experience rain on Wednesday, even as the country swelters under a heatwave that could push temperatures to 38C. Weather maps indicate showers will be concentrated in parts of western and northern Scotland, with isolated outbreaks also possible in Cumbria, north Wales, and the south-west of England.
Forecast details for Wednesday
According to the Met Office's latest outlook, Wednesday will start dry and sunny for most, but an isolated shower cannot be ruled out in western areas. Meteorologist Alex Burkill noted: 'We do stick with a bit of drizzly rain across the far northwest of Scotland.' However, he warned that the heat will keep 'building and building and building' through the day.
Temperatures are expected to reach the high 20s and low 30s widely, with some spots possibly exceeding 38C on Thursday. Overnight temperatures will also remain exceptionally high, offering little respite.
Areas forecast to see rain on Wednesday
- Outer Hebrides
- North-West Highlands
- Argyll and Bute
- Orkney
- Cumbria
- Gwynedd
- Cornwall
- Parts of Devon
These areas are expected to see only isolated showers, with the vast majority of the UK remaining hot and sunny.
Impact of the heatwave
Dozens of schools have announced closures, early finishes, or remote learning arrangements due to the extreme temperatures. The Met Office has urged people to stay up to date with the latest forecasts as conditions evolve through the week.
Fresher air is expected to spread eastwards later in the week, bringing some relief from the oppressive heat, but not before Wednesday peaks as one of the hottest days of the year so far.
