A couple who endured months of mysterious scratching noises emanating from behind their walls were left utterly astonished when they finally uncovered the source of the disturbance. Maddie Neale and her fiancé Nemo initially dismissed the intermittent sounds, but their patience wore thin as the scratching escalated into a daily nuisance that permeated every room of the property.
The Investigation Begins
The couple, who do not currently cohabit, were dealing with the issue at the home Nemo shared with roommates. "We had a theory that it was a bird or squirrel at first because of the scratching and the way we would hear it walk, but we were obviously wrong," Maddie explained to Newsweek. Determined to solve the mystery, they devised a clever plan to investigate without causing significant damage to the wall.
A Clever Use of Technology
Utilising a pre-existing hole from an old repair, they carefully slid a smartphone inside the wall cavity. By activating the camera's light, they hoped to capture footage of whatever was causing the persistent noise. The video reveals the interior structure of the wall, complete with insulation, as Maddie meticulously pans the camera from right to left.
The Shocking Discovery
As the camera moves to the left side of the wall's backing, a small snout and pair of eyes become visible on the ground. The unmistakable face of a raccoon peers back, prompting Maddie to gasp in sheer disbelief. The footage confirmed their worst fears: a wild animal had been living within the walls of their home for an extended period.
Social Media Sensation
Maddie posted the clip to TikTok, adding text that read, "hearing something scratching the walls for months so we check." The caption simply stated, "Case closed bruh." The video rapidly went viral, amassing over 24 million views, 2.4 million likes, and nearly 5,000 comments within just a few days.
Social media users were quick to share their humorous and analytical reactions. One person joked, "That raccoon was like 'thank god, I thought there was an animal in here'." Another speculated, "But the insulation moved? Are there multiple raccoons?" while a third added, "Maybe it's a mom raccoon, oftentimes they'll sneak themselves into attic spaces to give birth." Some debated whether the insulation had moved or if it was merely a trick of the camera angle.
Living with the Uninvited Guest
"We were obviously both shocked and had to show his other two roommates. It was funny for a little bit, but obviously more funny to me because I don't live there," Maddie recounted. Despite the raccoon's subsequent antics—including crawling into Nemo's cupboard to snack on pistachios and cough drops while he was away—the tenants have opted for a pragmatic approach.
Rather than pursuing an immediate removal, Nemo has used duct tape to seal any holes in his cupboards. The group has decided to tolerate the noise until Nemo graduates from university in May and moves out of the property. This unusual cohabitation highlights a blend of shock, humour, and resignation in the face of an unexpected wildlife intrusion.
