UK Faces Dual Threat of Snow and Flooding with Multiple Warnings Issued
The United Kingdom is currently grappling with severe weather conditions, as a yellow weather warning for snow and ice remains in effect across large portions of Scotland and parts of England. This alert, which extends from Derby northwards, is expected to persist until Sunday morning, posing significant risks to travel and public safety.
Widespread Flood Risks and Active Alerts
Simultaneously, the Environment Agency has issued a stark reminder for the public to remain vigilant due to widespread flood risks. As of Saturday night, a total of 74 flood warnings and 163 flood alerts were active across England. Jonathan Day, the flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, provided an update on the situation, noting that while more than 24,000 homes and businesses have been successfully protected from flooding, approximately 330 properties have unfortunately been inundated.
Snowfall Predictions and Icy Hazards
The Met Office has cautioned that heavy snowfall could lead to accumulations of 1-3cm at lower elevations, with higher ground potentially seeing 3-7cm above 150m and up to 10-15cm on areas exceeding 400m. Forecasters have also highlighted ice as an additional hazard, particularly in north-east England and parts of Scotland, where precipitation falling on frozen ground may create very slippery conditions.
Greg Dewhurst, a Met Office meteorologist, indicated that the snow is expected to transition to rain into Sunday morning, with a brief spell of freezing rain possible in some locations before clearing eastwards. A gradual thaw is anticipated to follow, bringing milder air to the south-west, with temperatures potentially reaching 12°C in Cornwall and Devon, while eastern areas remain cooler at around 4°C or 5°C.
Travel Disruptions and Future Forecast
The combination of snow, ice, and flooding has already caused significant travel delays across affected regions. The public is advised to exercise caution when venturing outdoors and to stay updated on the latest weather advisories. Looking ahead, the coming week is set to begin unsettled and blustery with further showers nationwide, easing by Tuesday. Another weather system is anticipated on Wednesday, bringing more unsettled conditions, before Thursday is expected to be drier.
