UK Weekend Weather: Snow Forecast for Scotland Amid Wintry Conditions

Britons should keep their winter coats handy as mixed weather conditions are set to sweep across the UK this weekend. Forecasters anticipate further showers for many regions, with the possibility of snowfall in parts of Scotland, according to the latest Met Office predictions.

Snowfall Expected in Eastern Scotland

The Met Office has indicated that some snowfall is likely over the higher hills in eastern Scotland. Milder air filtering in will combine with rain and sleet, creating wintry conditions. "Eastern Scotland will continue to receive a feed of rain off the North Sea, with some snow possible over the higher hills. Snowfall amounts are not expected to be significant as milder air filters in, but the combination of rain, sleet and hill snow may still make conditions feel wintry", the Met Office stated. Despite modest temperature rises, the brisk wind and moisture will contribute to a distinctly chilly feel, particularly in the east and northeast where temperatures may only reach 5C to 7C on Saturday.

Regional Weather Variations Across the UK

Weather patterns will vary significantly across the country:

  • Wales and Southwest England: Heavy showers are expected on Saturday, likely moving into Northern Ireland later in the day.
  • Eastern England: Sheltered from the worst rainfall, with fewer showers and more dry intervals.
  • Western Scotland: Greatest likelihood of sunshine throughout Saturday, offering dry and brighter weather.
  • England and Wales: Temperatures will be average for mid-February, with highs around 10C to 11C, feeling relatively mild compared to earlier colder spells.

Sunday Forecast: Unsettled Conditions Persist

On Sunday, the Met Office predicts slow-moving showers and continued unsettled conditions. "As the low-pressure system continues to weaken on Sunday, its slow movement means that rainfall patterns may be less well-defined. Bands of showers could linger across eastern Scotland, again raising concerns about the cumulative impact of wet weather in that region", the forecasters explained. Northeast England might experience a wet start, depending on the evolution of the low-pressure system in the early hours.

Overall, England and Wales have a better chance of sunny spells developing during Sunday as cloud breaks increase. "This will offer a welcome respite from the wetter conditions many have experienced recently. Once again, western Scotland looks favoured for dry and brighter weather thanks to shelter from the prevailing southeasterly flow", the Met Office added. Showers remain possible almost anywhere, but the best sunshine is expected across western Scotland and, at times, in England and Wales.
