England's final pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica was delayed by an hour after a heavy thunderstorm hit Orlando, Florida. The match, scheduled to kick off at 9pm UK time (4pm local), was postponed due to severe weather conditions that left the pitch at Inter&Co Stadium heavily waterlogged.
Storm Hits Orlando
A thunderstorm descended around 1pm local time, battering the city with torrential rain and lightning. The downpour continued relentlessly, causing the pitch to become waterlogged an hour and a half before the scheduled start. Although the drainage system worked efficiently, the kick-off was pushed back by one hour as rain and inclement weather persisted in the area.
Delay Rules
According to safety protocols, any lightning strike within an eight-mile radius of the stadium would trigger an additional 30-minute delay. Fortunately, the weather appeared to clear by 3.30pm local time (8.30pm BST), allowing the match to proceed at the revised time.
Official Statement
A Football Association statement confirmed: “Following a pitch inspection at the stadium, today’s match against Costa Rica will now kick off at 5pm ET (10pm UK time) – subject to there being no further lightning strikes in the area.”
Fan Reactions
England fans in the area sought shelter wherever possible, with some taking refuge inside a local library, while others braved the elements. The delay did little to dampen spirits as supporters eagerly awaited the match.
Team Lineup
Thomas Tuchel named Jude Bellingham in the starting XI in the No.10 position, giving him an opportunity to stake a claim for a starting spot in next week's World Cup opener against Croatia. Harry Kane led the line, supported by Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke, while Declan Rice partnered Elliot Anderson in midfield.
