The UK is set for a dramatic shift in weather as a powerful Arctic blast is forecast to bring the first widespread snow of the season next week, with the cold snap potentially reaching southern parts of the country.
From Deluge to Deep Freeze
Following the heavy rain brought by Storm Claudia, forecasters at the Met Office predict a significant change. High pressure is expected to shift south towards the Azores over the weekend, opening the door for frigid northerly winds to sweep across the nation.
This will cause temperatures to tumble, bringing winter-like conditions. The mercury could plunge to a biting -4°C in parts of Scotland in the early hours of Monday. The cold is then predicted to extend nationwide, with temperatures falling 'several degrees' below the seasonal average.
Snow Timeline and Key Areas at Risk
The Met Office states there is a "reasonable" chance of snow as the Arctic air establishes itself. The probability of wintry showers increases through the week, starting in the north.
According to forecast site OpenWeather, the timeline for potential snow is as follows:
- Monday: Snow could arrive in parts of Scotland and the North East.
- Tuesday: Snow may hit parts of Wales and potentially Gloucestershire in the South West. Overnight temperatures could sink to -2°C in the North West of England.
- Wednesday: A chance of snow in Northern Ireland, with widespread overnight lows of 0°C to 2°C across central England and Scotland.
The forecaster has highlighted a growing chance of sleet and snow, particularly over hills and mountains in Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, and possibly North Wales.
A Widespread Wintry Spell Possible
Towards the end of next week, the situation could intensify. The Met Office warns that a "widespread wintry spell" could reach the UK. Some weather models suggest a 20% or greater chance of more than 1cm of snow accumulating, even in southern areas of the country.
In its long-range forecast for November 19 to 28, the Met Office confirms that colder conditions from the north will extend south to affect all parts. They state: "It is as this clears Wednesday that the colder conditions will extend south, bringing some snow showers into northern parts, and the first frosts of the season for many parts of the south."
Alongside the snow, there is a significant risk of ice forming, especially where rain falls onto frozen surfaces. Brits are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and prepare for the onset of winter weather.
