Deadly Storm Ravages Karachi: At Least 15 Killed, Dozens Injured
A devastating overnight storm struck Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, on Wednesday into Thursday, resulting in a tragic loss of life and widespread damage. Authorities have confirmed that at least 15 people were killed and more than two dozen others injured as heavy rains and powerful winds battered the metropolitan area.
Emergency Services Respond to Collapsed Structures
According to emergency services and hospital officials, the severe weather caused walls and roofs to collapse at multiple locations across Karachi. Police surgeon Summaiya Tariq reported that at least 15 bodies were transported to the city's main hospital, while numerous injured individuals received treatment at various medical facilities following weather-related incidents.
Rescue officials and police detailed that the storm uprooted roadside trees and significantly disrupted traffic throughout the city. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab urgently advised residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, noting that fallen trees were creating hazardous conditions and municipal crews were actively working to clear obstructed roadways.
Meteorological Details and Ongoing Threats
The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded wind speeds reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour (56 miles per hour) that persisted for several hours during the storm. Forecasters warned that additional rainfall and thunderstorms, accompanied by strong winds and potential isolated hailstorms, could continue to affect Karachi and other regions of Sindh province as a westerly weather system moves across the area.
Emergency services also reported that rain and storms impacted many other areas across Pakistan, though Karachi experienced the most severe consequences. The capital of southern Sindh province faced particularly destructive conditions as the tempest that began on Wednesday intensified overnight.
Community Impact and Safety Measures
The storm's aftermath has left the community grappling with both human casualties and infrastructure damage. Authorities have emphasized the importance of safety precautions, urging citizens to heed weather warnings and restrict movement until conditions improve. The combination of structural collapses, fallen trees, and traffic disruptions has created a challenging environment for both residents and emergency responders.
As recovery efforts continue, officials remain vigilant about the potential for further severe weather in the region, highlighting the need for ongoing public awareness and preparedness in the face of such meteorological events.
