Freak Accident Leaves Woman Suspended Mid-Air
Ella Day Brooke, a 22-year-old Australian national, succumbed to her injuries on 30 January after suffering cardiac arrest during the traumatic event at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Otari, Nagano Prefecture. According to resort officials, the tragedy unfolded when an unfastened waist-belt buckle on her backpack caught on the lift chair while the chest strap remained securely fastened.
This dangerous combination meant the backpack did not detach from Brooke's body as she attempted to disembark. Instead, she was dragged across the snow surface before becoming suspended mid-air, unable to free herself from the moving machinery.
Emergency Response and Investigation Launched
The ski lift was eventually stopped when an alert attendant pressed the emergency button, allowing resort staff to rush the critically injured woman to hospital. "Emergency assistance was promptly provided, and the guest was then transported to a hospital by ambulance," stated Kubo Tsuneo, chief executive of the resort's operating company.
Despite these efforts, medical personnel declared Brooke deceased upon her arrival at the hospital. The Tsugaike Mountain Resort and Tsugaike Gondola Lift Company have issued a joint apology and confirmed that a comprehensive investigation into the incident will be conducted.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the death and is providing consular assistance to Brooke's grieving family. "We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment," a department spokesperson stated.
