easyJet passengers planning to travel with only hand luggage must be aware of specific restrictions on items commonly carried in handbags or rucksacks. The airline has recently clarified its safety regulations, particularly regarding sharp objects like knitting needles, after a customer inquiry on social media prompted an official update on restricted items.
Social Media Inquiry Sparks Clarification
A passenger posted on X, asking easyJet if circular knitting needles could be taken on a flight from Liverpool to Faro in June, mentioning they were knitting hearts for hospitals. In response, easyJet thanked the customer for the question and stated that sharp objects or items with pointed edges capable of causing injury are not allowed in cabin baggage. The airline emphasised that such items must be packed in hold luggage and directed passengers to their restricted items page for further details.
Detailed Guidance on Sharp Objects
According to easyJet's online guidance, certain items are permitted in the cabin under strict conditions. Tweezers can be brought onboard, as well as scissors with rounded ends and blades shorter than 6cm. Razor blades are only allowed if they are set in plastic, and knives with blades not exceeding 6cm may be taken on board. However, other sharp objects, including knitting needles, are explicitly prohibited in cabin luggage.
This clarification is crucial for craft enthusiasts who often pack such items for travel. The issue frequently arises on social media, with easyJet consistently applying the same rules to similar items like sewing needles. In a previous post from 2025, another customer inquired about sewing needles, to which easyJet confirmed that both sewing and knitting needles are not allowed onboard, reinforcing the policy across all sharp craft tools.
Comprehensive Restricted Items List
Passengers are encouraged to consult easyJet's website for a full list of restricted items, which extends beyond sharp objects. Restrictions also apply to liquids, food and drink, cigarettes and vapes, dry ice, smart luggage, camera equipment, and camping gear. The airline provides detailed information on luggage types, including options for purchasing hold luggage.
Each customer, including children and infants, can buy up to three hold bags. A standard hold bag allows 23kg, with the option to purchase extra weight in 3kg units, up to a maximum of 32kg per bag. For those travelling with family or friends on the same booking, weight allowances can be pooled, offering flexibility for group travel.
By adhering to these guidelines, passengers can ensure a smoother travel experience and avoid potential issues at security checks. easyJet's proactive communication aims to enhance safety and convenience for all travellers.
