Martin Lewis' MSE Issues Europe Travel Warning to Millions
MSE Warns Over 2 Million About Expiring GHIC Cards

MoneySavingExpert (MSE), founded by Martin Lewis, has issued a critical travel warning for holidaymakers heading to Europe this summer. In its latest Money Tips Email, the consumer advice platform urged over two million people to check their Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before travelling.

Urgent Advice for Holidaymakers

The MSE team stressed the importance of securing travel insurance immediately after booking a holiday. They wrote: "Summer is coming, and if you're booked to go away and haven't got your insurance yet, you need to do it NOW, today, straight away!" Booking insurance early provides maximum protection, including cover if unforeseen events prevent travel.

Additionally, MSE highlighted that over two million GHIC and EHIC cards are set to expire this year. Without a valid card, travellers may face higher healthcare costs in the European Economic Area (EEA).

What is a GHIC?

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) allows UK residents to access necessary state healthcare in EEA countries at the same cost as local residents. It has replaced the older EHIC, though existing EHICs remain valid until their expiry date. The NHS explains: "The UK GHIC lets you get necessary state healthcare in the EEA on the same basis as a resident of that country. This may be free or require a payment equivalent to what a local would pay."

While travel insurance is still recommended, a GHIC can help avoid excess fees for medical treatment abroad. MSE advised: "Going to the EU? Ensure you've a valid (free) GHIC/EHIC - over 2m expire this year."

How to Apply

A UK GHIC is free and can be applied for via the NHS website. The NHS warns against unofficial websites that may charge fees. You can apply up to nine months before your current card expires. The NHS states: "You can apply for a UK GHIC if you're a resident in the UK. You can also add your family members to your application."

MSE's warning comes as millions prepare for summer holidays, urging travellers to check their cards now to avoid disruptions.
