Tourist Bus Plunges Down Ravine on La Gomera, Leaving One Dead and Many Injured
Tourist Bus Crash on La Gomera Kills One, Injures Up to 20

A tragic accident on the picturesque island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands has resulted in one fatality and left up to 20 people injured, with some in serious condition. The incident occurred when a tourist bus veered off the road and plunged down a steep embankment.

Emergency Response Mobilised

The crash happened at approximately 1:30 pm on the GM-2 road in San Sebastian, a popular holiday hotspot on La Gomera. The emergency services, including multiple helicopters, were swiftly dispatched to the scene. The magnitude of the accident prompted an unprecedented emergency mobilisation in the area.

Complex Rescue Operation

Many passengers were trapped inside the bus, requiring the fire brigade to release them. The rescue teams also secured the vehicle to prevent it from rolling further down the ravine. The challenging orography of the terrain, near a mountain tunnel and a hazardous hairpin bend high above rocky ground, has complicated the rescue efforts.

Authorities, including Civil Protection, Environment of the Cabildo de La Gomera, and Volunteer Firefighters, worked to stabilise the bus structure. The Civil Guard cordoned off the area to facilitate the landing of air resources and ensure the safety of intervention teams.

Casualties and Injuries

A statement from the 112 emergency service confirmed that one person has died, three are gravely injured, and another eleven have suffered moderate injuries. These numbers are expected to rise as more details emerge. The nationalities of those involved and the full extent of their injuries have not yet been disclosed.

Evacuation and Medical Care

The 112 Canarias activated helicopters from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) and an aerial medical unit to evacuate the most seriously injured to various hospitals. Several ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service and police resources are also operating at the scene.

Investigation Underway

According to preliminary information, the driver lost control at a critical point on the road, causing the bus to cross the road and fall down the embankment. The Civil Traffic Guard has launched an investigation, but it is still too early to determine the exact causes. Authorities are collecting testimonies from occupants in mild condition and analysing brake tracks on the asphalt.

Road Safety Concerns

La Gomera, renowned for its beauty, has a network of narrow and high roads that traverse the mountains. Tourists often describe crossing the island as "taking your life in your hands" due to the potentially dangerous conditions. The vehicle, described as a tourist bus, may have been on an excursion or transporting holidaymakers to their hotel, but this remains unconfirmed.

This is a breaking news story, and further updates are expected as the situation develops.
