The Met Office has identified 41 areas across the UK that will experience rain on Wednesday as a weather front moves in from the Atlantic. The band of rain will first hit Northern Ireland at 1pm, completely drenching the country, before moving to Scotland by 4pm. The entire west coast of Scotland will be covered, with up to 2mm of rain falling per hour initially.
Heavy Rain Expected in Scotland
By 7pm, heavier rain will set in, with up to 8mm falling per hour over the west coast, the highlands, and the north of Scotland. The worst of the rain will ease by 10pm, though lighter showers will linger, covering most of the country except for the east coast over Aberdeenshire.
Rain Moves South Overnight
Overnight into Thursday, the rain will move south over parts of England and Wales. At 1am, parts of northwest England will be drenched, including the Pennines and Lake District, while a central band of Wales has also been forecast rain. According to the Met Office, scattered showers are expected on Tuesday, with thunderstorms possible in the north, followed by largely dry conditions with sunny spells but occasional showery outbreaks.
End of Heatwave Brings Fresher Weather
Brits can expect “fresher than of late” weather after a period of oppressive humidity and record-breaking June heat. The UK provisionally broke its maximum temperature record on Friday, reaching 37.3C at Santon Downham in Suffolk, exceeding figures from June 24 and 25. Met Office chief forecaster Andy Page said: “Friday marks the peak of the heatwave in terms of temperatures and the third consecutive day of record-breaking June heat. This exceptional heat has been unprecedented for June and is another marker on how climate change is shifting the dial on temperature extremes in the UK.”
