Carrick Could Offer Rashford Man United Lifeline After Loan

Marcus Rashford could be given a lifeline by new Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, following a loan spell at Barcelona that ended without a permanent transfer. The 28-year-old forward contributed 14 goals and 14 assists for Barcelona, but the Catalan club opted not to trigger a £26million buy option, instead recruiting Newcastle's Anthony Gordon for that role.

Rashford's Uncertain Future

Rashford has not featured for Manchester United since December 2024 and spent last season on loan at Barcelona. He previously had a loan spell at Aston Villa after a breakdown in relations with former manager Ruben Amorim. Now, with Carrick appointed as Amorim's permanent replacement, Rashford may have a pathway back to his childhood club.

He is expected to rejoin United for pre-season following positive discussions between his advisers and the club, who are reluctant to approve a third temporary departure for Rashford. Reports at the start of Carrick's tenure in January suggested the boss was keen to have his former colleague back at the club next season. When questioned about Rashford's situation in April, Carrick kept the possibility open: "I just think there's decisions to be made in time, really, on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation. But at this point in time nothing's been decided."

Kobbie Mainoo's Revival as a Blueprint

Rashford's predicament mirrors the uncertainty young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo encountered during Amorim's spell in charge. The 21-year-old was repeatedly subjected to transfer rumours until Carrick's arrival, with the manager immediately reinstating Mainoo to the squad. The academy product made his first league appearance of the season in Carrick's debut match and retained his starting position for the rest of the campaign. In April, Mainoo signed a new five-year deal, illustrating how a managerial shift can transform a player's fortunes.

Carrick's Attacking Options

Carrick deployed Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha on the left wing last season, both of whom can fill alternative positions. United have also been strongly linked with West Ham's Crysencio Summerville. Retaining Rashford would free up funds for the club to reinforce elsewhere. Rashford has two years left on his United contract.

Rashford spoke candidly about his future last season: "I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup, I wanted it done before. If it's not, I wanted it to wait until after. I want to be fully present in the moment." While he remains focused on the World Cup, Carrick has orchestrated a revival at Old Trafford, driving United into the Champions League positions. Carrick played alongside Rashford at United and also coached him during earlier stints. The 44-year-old will be aware that his former teammate could provide a significant boost to the side's attacking options.
