David de Gea has 'made it clear' that he'd only leave Fiorentina for a sensational return to Manchester United, it has been claimed. The 35-year-old goalkeeper, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford before leaving in 2023, is now the subject of transfer speculation after a mixed 2025/26 season in Serie A.
De Gea's Stance on a United Return
According to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Fiorentina are 'ready to listen to offers' for De Gea, who has indicated that the only club he would leave Florence for is Manchester United. The Spaniard joined Fiorentina in August 2024 after more than a year without a club following his departure from United.
During his first season in Florence, De Gea impressed with 11 clean sheets in 42 matches, conceding just 50 goals. That form earned him a new three-year contract. However, his performances dipped in the 2025/26 campaign, prompting talk of a summer exit.
Previous Links and Emotional Return
De Gea was linked with a shock return to United last summer after an impressive performance in a pre-season friendly at Old Trafford. At the time, United made 'discreet background checks' on the goalkeeper but ultimately signed Senne Lammens instead. Lammens enjoyed a stunning first season as United's No.1, and both Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana are expected to leave the club this summer, potentially opening the door for De Gea as a second-choice option.
Speaking after last summer's friendly, De Gea described his return to Old Trafford as 'emotional'. 'It's a game I'll never forget, for sure,' he said. 'Sometimes it's difficult to describe with words how you feel on the pitch, seeing the crowd, with everybody there. It was so emotional for me.'
De Gea's United Legacy
De Gea made 545 appearances for Manchester United after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2011. He won the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Europa League during his time at the club. After his contract expired in June 2023, he left as a free agent and spent over a year without a club before joining Fiorentina.
With United potentially needing a backup to Lammens, and De Gea eager to return, a reunion could be on the cards this summer. Fiorentina's willingness to sell further strengthens the possibility of a remarkable comeback for the Spanish shot-stopper.
