Figo: Barcelona's Finances Make Rashford Transfer Not a Priority
Figo: Rashford Transfer Not Barcelona's Priority

Former Barcelona star Luis Figo has stated that the club will prioritise their young talents over Marcus Rashford due to their financial constraints, casting doubt on a permanent move for the Manchester United loanee.

Rashford's Loan Spell at Barcelona

The forward is spending the season on loan at the Nou Camp and has impressed when given opportunities. However, Barcelona have a purchase option of £26 million, which represents good value if they can restore Rashford to his best form. The Englishman is not a regular starter given the depth of talent available to manager Hansi Flick, competing with the likes of Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for a place, while Barcelona continue to rely on their academy graduates.

Figo's Assessment

Speaking to The Times, Figo said: “Whenever he has had opportunities, he has shown the quality he has. But as it’s a loan, it’s hard to say what’s going to happen in the future. Barça have very talented young players, who have been given priority and opportunities because of the financial problems that have stopped them signing much.”

Potential Alternatives

If Barcelona invest in a new forward, with Robert Lewandowski expected to leave when his contract expires, their priority is likely to be Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez. The Argentine is a leading talent and would cost close to £100 million.

Flick has remained non-committal when asked about Rashford's future, stating: "I'm very happy with Marcus. He has shown his quality and he scored an important goal. I can't say anything about his future, we have to focus on the matches until the end of the season."

Rashford's return to Manchester United seems unlikely after a clash of attitudes with former manager Ruben Amorim led to his departure. Even a change in the dugout may not afford him a second chance at Old Trafford.
