Ronald Koeman has stepped down as Netherlands manager just hours after the Dutch were eliminated from the World Cup in a penalty shootout against Morocco. The decision was announced via a lengthy Instagram statement in which Koeman cited his wife's ongoing health battle as a key factor.
World Cup Exit and Immediate Resignation
The Netherlands entered the tournament in North America with a sluggish start, drawing 2-2 with Japan. However, they rebounded strongly, scoring eight goals in their final two group matches against Sweden and Tunisia to top their group. Their reward was a round-of-32 clash against Morocco, who had recently reached the Africa Cup of Nations final.
Despite taking the lead through Cody Gakpo midway through the second half, the Dutch could not hold on. Issa Diop equalised in added time, and the match went to a penalty shootout, which the Netherlands lost 3-2. Koeman's contract was set to expire after the World Cup, but he chose to walk away immediately.
Koeman's Statement: Health and Family First
In his Instagram post, Koeman said: "We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn't work out. No one is more disappointed about that than me. As a head coach, you carry that responsibility. I have always felt that and I will always continue to feel that."
He added: "Moreover, the past years have made me realize again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes. My wife Bartina has supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as a national coach, despite her own illness process. That is a testimony to incredible strength. I appreciate her more than I’ll ever be able to put into words."
Koeman thanked the players, staff, the KNVB, and supporters, saying: "It was a great honor to be able to represent the Netherlands as a head coach."
Ibrahimovic's Criticism
The resignation comes after Zlatan Ibrahimovic blasted Koeman on FOX Sports' post-match coverage. Ibrahimovic said: "I think this loss is on Koeman because I didn’t recognise this Dutch team. He lost with an identity that is not the Dutch identity and that makes me angry. Lose with your identity. That’s who you are."
The Netherlands ended the match with less than 30 per cent possession and managed only two shots on target in 120 minutes. They remain the team to have reached the most World Cup finals without winning the competition, having finished as runners-up on three occasions.
What's Next for the Netherlands
The Dutch now face a short turnaround before their UEFA Nations League campaign begins in the autumn, with qualifying for Euro 2028 set to start next year. The search for Koeman's successor will begin immediately.
