Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed that 190 Halifax branches across the UK will be rebranded as Lloyds branches in 2026, effectively removing the historic Halifax brand name from the high street. The announcement follows the group's earlier confirmation that 56 Halifax branches will close this year, as part of a broader plan to shut 95 branches across its Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands by March 2027.
Rebranding Details
In a statement issued on July 1, 2026, Halifax announced: “The Halifax brand is changing to Lloyds. If you are a Halifax customer there is nothing to do right now, we'll keep you updated along the way. Please remember as part of this change, we will never ask customers to share their personal details or move money by e-mail, phone or text.” The bank added that account features and benefits remain unchanged for now, and updates will be communicated to customers before any changes take effect.
The rebranding affects branches that will remain open, while 56 Halifax locations are set to close in 2026. Lloyds acquired Halifax in 2009, and the two brands have operated alongside each other since then. The move marks the end of the Halifax brand, which first opened in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1853.
Broader Branch Closure Plans
In February 2026, Lloyds Banking Group announced plans to close 95 branches across its three brands by March 2027. The closures include 53 Lloyds Bank, 31 Halifax, and 11 Bank of Scotland sites. The first closures began in May 2026. The group stated that the closures are part of a shift towards digital banking, offering customers “more freedom and choice to bank in a way that works for them.”
To protect access to cash, the cash access network Link confirmed that 14 new locations will receive banking hubs. These hubs are shared spaces staffed by different banks on different days, providing services such as cash withdrawals, bill payments, and cash deposits.
Customer Impact
Halifax customers can continue to manage their money using the Halifax, Lloyds, or Bank of Scotland apps, online banking, and branches. The bank emphasized that customers do not need to take any immediate action. A spokeswoman for Lloyds said earlier this year: “Customers want the freedom to bank in the way that works for them and we offer more choice and ways to manage money than ever before. From our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service to local banking options like our community bankers, PayPoint and access to all of our Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches, we’re giving our customers the flexibility to bank wherever and whenever they need us.”
The rebranding and closures are expected to be completed by early 2027, with 190 Halifax branches becoming Lloyds branches and the remaining 56 closing permanently.
