Manchester City are close to agreeing a new contract with 20-year-old midfielder Charlie Gray after his previous deal expired at the end of June. The academy graduate, who made his senior debut last season, was offered fresh terms as his contract wound down, and an agreement is believed to be near.
Gray's Future and Pre-Season Plans
Gray's long-term future had been uncertain, with links to Sunderland last summer and other interest from clubs. However, the new City deal will resolve any immediate doubts. He could also have an opportunity to join the pre-season tour as Enzo Maresca's side plays three matches in Asia in early August.
Youth Team Success and Senior Debut
Gray impressed with City's youth teams last season, particularly with a standout performance in a 4-0 UEFA Youth League win away at Real Madrid. He was subsequently included in the squad for the Carabao Cup tie against Brentford in December, coming on for the final minutes to make his senior debut.
"Getting the debut in the end was a dream come true," Gray told the Manchester Evening News. "You get told that you're in the squad the day before and just from that I was obviously over the moon just being on the bench. I was never expecting to come on but with 10 minutes left I got the call back and just a rush to get on the pitch."
He added: "I had quite a few family there - probably seven or eight. With it being my first time on the bench, it was just in case for the what if so they were all buzzing for me. They've taken me to training since I was young, watched my game since Under-5s at Platt Lane so seeing that and then me playing at the Etihad was a proud moment for them as well."
