Man United's Summer Transfer Woes Echo 2022 De Jong Saga
Man United Summer Transfer Woes Echo 2022 De Jong Saga

Manchester United are experiencing a summer transfer window reminiscent of 2022, when they spent months chasing Frenkie de Jong only to be rejected, but that ultimately worked out with the signing of Casemiro. This year, they have already missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, but the club remains optimistic about finding alternatives.

History Repeating Itself

Four years ago, Manchester United agreed a deal worth an initial £63million with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong, with a further £8.5million in add-ons. However, despite months of pursuit, De Jong never committed to the move, and United were forced to pivot in mid-August after starting the season with defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

They signed Casemiro from Real Madrid for up to £70million. While some questioned the fee and wages for a player in his 30s, Casemiro became a key figure, leaving this summer after an emotional farewell at Old Trafford. According to Tyrone Marshall, Senior Manchester United Football Writer, "if United had had a few more players capable of that level of performance and with that personality and character over the last four years, they would have been in a better place."

Current Transfer Targets Missed

This summer, United targeted Elliot Anderson as an ideal replacement for Casemiro, but he became too expensive and expressed a desire to join Manchester City. Mateus Fernandes, a promising 21-year-old, also slipped away after United decided not to match Tottenham's bid.

The club's pivot to data-led recruitment means they have a long list of midfield options that could be good fits. United need two or three midfielders this summer, as well as additions elsewhere.

Optimism Amid Doubt

While there is doubt among some fans, the experience of 2022 shows that missing out on top targets does not have to be a disaster. When Casemiro said goodbye against Nottingham Forest in May 2026, nobody was pining for De Jong. United now need to prove they can land a midfielder who fits their profile at the right price.
