Nationwide Reports Significant Rise in Gambling Expenditure as Sporting Calendar Intensifies

Nationwide Building Society has disclosed a notable 9% increase in the total value of customer spending on gambling activities during January 2026, compared to the same period in the previous year. This surge coincides with a 7% rise in the number of gambling-related transactions processed by Britain's largest building society over the same timeframe.

Survey Reveals Heightened Gambling Expectations for 2026

A comprehensive survey commissioned by Nationwide, involving 2,000 individuals who engage in gambling, uncovered that approximately two-thirds (68%) anticipate betting more frequently throughout 2026. This expectation is largely attributed to a packed schedule of major sporting events, which traditionally drive increased gambling activity.

While the majority of customers manage their gambling expenditures responsibly, Nationwide is proactively encouraging individuals to remain vigilant for signs of problematic gambling behaviour. The building society's data analysis indicates that those within the top 10% of gambling spenders allocate an average of £745 per month towards such activities.

Gambling Blocks and Cooling-Off Periods as Protective Measures

In line with many financial institutions, Nationwide provides customers with the option to implement gambling blocks on their accounts, restricting transactions related to gambling platforms. However, the survey highlighted a concerning knowledge gap, with around one-fifth (19%) of gamblers unaware that banks and building societies offer these protective features.

Kathryn Townsend, Head of Customer Vulnerability at Nationwide, emphasised the importance of early intervention and robust safeguards. "With a year of major sporting events ahead, we're concerned that more people could find themselves gambling more than they can afford. That's why early identification and strong safeguards matter," she stated.

Nationwide has incorporated a 72-hour cooling-off period for its gambling block feature, designed to provide an additional layer of protection and help individuals maintain control over their gambling habits. "No one should feel they have to face gambling harm alone – help is available, without judgment, whenever they need it," Townsend added.

Charity Warns of Hidden Harms and Common Impacts

Raminta Diliso, Senior Partnerships Manager at the charity GamCare, underscored the often-concealed nature of gambling-related harm. "Gambling harm is often a very hidden issue but the problems it can cause people can be significant," she remarked.

Diliso further explained that financial difficulties, mental health struggles, and relationship challenges are prevalent among those grappling with gambling issues, highlighting the multifaceted impact on individuals' lives.

Key Indicators of Potential Gambling Harm

Nationwide has outlined several potential signs of gambling harm that individuals should be aware of:

  1. Withdrawn behaviour and constant phone checking due to high-stakes bets.
  2. Noticeable shifts in mood and behaviour, such as appearing worried, agitated, or upset without clear cause.
  3. Chasing losses and experiencing sleep disturbances, often linked to anxiety or persistent worrying.
  4. Unexplained missing funds from bank accounts or pressure to borrow money.
  5. Dishonesty about time allocation or requests for money to cover bills.

The survey for Nationwide was conducted by Censuswide in February 2026, providing timely insights into gambling trends and attitudes as the year progresses.
