Pensioners Over 66 Could Get Up to £388 in One-Off Payments

People over State Pension age in the UK could be entitled to up to £388 in one-off cash payments this year, with additional support for heating bills. The payments, administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Scottish Government, aim to help pensioners manage higher winter energy costs.

Payments Available for Pensioners

Four separate cash payments and one direct energy bill discount are available, totaling up to £538 in additional support. Most payments will be issued later in 2026, but households should factor them into autumn budgets as energy bills are expected to rise due to increased usage and Ofgem price cap changes.

For a single pensioner aged 66-79 living in Scotland, the combined cash payments could reach £283.15: £211.15 from the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, £62 from the Winter Heating Payment, and a £10 DWP Christmas Bonus. Those aged 80 and over in Scotland could receive £388.70: £316.70 from the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, £62 Winter Heating Payment, and £10 Christmas Bonus. Adding the £150 Warm Home Discount brings total support to £538.70.

Winter Fuel Payment and Pension Age Winter Heating Payment

The Pension Age Winter Heating Payment has replaced Winter Fuel Payments in Scotland. Eligible pensioners with a Scottish postcode, born on or before June 27, 1960, with an annual income at or below £35,000, will receive either £211.15 or £316.70 this winter, depending on age and living arrangements.

In England and Wales, the DWP issues Winter Fuel Payments of £200 for those aged 66-79 and £300 for those 80 and over, automatically to pensioners born before June 28, 1960, with income at or below £35,000. Pensioners with income above £35,000 are not eligible and must repay any payment received via PAYE or Self Assessment, or they can opt out.

Winter Heating Payment (£62) – Scotland Only

The Winter Heating Payment of £62 is a cash payment from the Scottish Government for those on certain benefits, including Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Support for Mortgage Interest. Payments are typically issued in December; the qualifying week is expected to be early November 2026.

Pension Age Winter Heating Payment – Up to £316.70

Eligible pensioners in Scotland born on or before June 27, 1960, will automatically receive a one-off heating payment. The qualifying week is September 21-27, 2026, and recipients must have lived in Scotland on at least the last day of that week. Payment rates for winter 2026/27 are: £105.55 for pensioners in residential care; £211.15 for single pensioners aged 66-79; £316.70 for single pensioners aged 80+; £105.55 each for couples aged 66-79; and £158.35 each for couples aged 80+. Exclusions apply for those in hospital for the full qualifying week and preceding 52 weeks, those in custody, or those with immigration restrictions on public funds.

Winter Fuel Payments – Between £200 and £300 (Not Scotland)

The DWP has confirmed that the 2026/27 Winter Fuel Payment will be issued automatically to those born before June 28, 1960, with an annual income at or below £35,000. Payments are £200 for those aged 66-79 and £300 for those 80 or over. Full details are available on GOV.UK.

Warm Home Discount – £150 Paid to Energy Provider

The Warm Home Discount Scheme for winter 2026/27 typically opens in October, providing £150 off electricity bills for people on certain benefits. The DWP pays energy suppliers directly between October and March. Eligible households may also get the discount on gas bills if their supplier provides both. Credit customers receive the £150 as credit; Pay As You Go or prepayment customers receive a voucher. Eligibility rules have changed this year to support more households. Full details will be updated when the scheme opens in October.

DWP Christmas Bonus – £10

The Christmas Bonus is a one-off, tax-free £10 payment for those receiving State Pension or certain other benefits during the qualifying week, usually the first full week of December. It is paid automatically into the account where the pension or benefit is received and may arrive on a different day. Qualifying benefits include Adult Disability Payment, Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, Pension Credit, Personal Independence Payment, State Pension, and many others. Those who have not claimed State Pension and are not entitled to another qualifying benefit will not receive the bonus.
