Supermarket Giant Asda Issues Urgent Recall of Children's Toys Over Asbestos Concerns

British supermarket chain Asda has launched an urgent product recall for two types of children's toys following the discovery that they may contain trace levels of asbestos. The recall affects Stretcherz "Stretch Squad" figurines and "Slammerz" figures, both of which contain a sand-like material inside that testing has shown could be contaminated with asbestos fibers.

Details of the Affected Products

The toys in question were sold across Asda stores nationwide over a significant two-year period, from January 2024 through February 2026. The specific products being recalled are identifiable by their barcode numbers: 5050837662419 and 5050835105345. These stretchable figurines, which can expand up to three times their normal size, have been popular children's items, with the Slammerz version featuring oversized heads that splat and reform when slammed down.

In an official statement, Asda emphasized that "asbestos should not be present in any amount" in consumer products and acknowledged the seriousness of the situation by stating they are "very sorry" for any inconvenience caused to customers. The supermarket chain clarified that no other Stretcherz toys are affected by this recall, only the two specific product lines mentioned.

Safety Precautions and Customer Guidance

Asda has advised all customers who purchased these toys to immediately stop using them and return the items to the store where they were originally bought to receive a full refund. The supermarket described this action as being taken "out of an abundance of caution" and in alignment with their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality for their products.

"The overall risk is considered low," Asda stated, "but because asbestos should not be present in any amount, we are recalling the affected items as a precaution." The company confirmed that they have received no reports of harm or adverse health effects related to these toys, but are proceeding with the recall as a preventive safety measure.

Broader Context of Asbestos Concerns

This toy recall comes amidst growing concerns about asbestos contamination in various consumer products. Just weeks prior to Asda's announcement, craft retailer Hobby Craft was forced to halt sales of colored sand after independent laboratory testing allegedly revealed asbestos fibers in bottles of yellow, green, and pink sand sold in their Giant Box of Crafts kits.

The situation echoes a more severe incident that occurred in Australia last November, where 69 schools were forced to close temporarily when colored play sand was recalled due to asbestos contamination risks. These consecutive incidents highlight ongoing challenges in ensuring complete safety in children's products and craft materials that contain granular or sand-like components.

Asda has established dedicated customer service channels to provide further guidance and assistance regarding the recall process. The supermarket chain reiterated its apology for any disruption caused while emphasizing its primary concern for customer safety and wellbeing.
