A bride has issued a stark warning about the growing trend of couples jumping into a pool at the end of their wedding reception, after the tradition nearly turned fatal on her special day. Shelby Crawford, a newlywed from Tennessee, shared her harrowing experience on TikTok, urging others to think twice before following the viral practice.
The Dangers of the Pool Jump Trend
Jumping into water has become a hallmark of the “trash the dress” trend, where brides intentionally ruin their gowns after the ceremony for a memorable or viral photo opportunity. However, Shelby’s video reveals how quickly things can go wrong. The clip shows her and her husband, Corey Crawford, leaping into a swimming pool together after their nuptials. While Corey resurfaces swiftly, Shelby becomes engulfed by the enormous train of her wedding dress.
Shelby can be seen struggling underwater until Corey helps lift the dress out of the way, allowing her head to surface. “The saxophones getting louder as everyone films me drowning in my wedding dress,” she wrote over the video. In the caption, she added: “In their defense, they said I was so quiet they didn’t think anything was wrong… to which I replied, ‘Yeah, drowning is typically silent.’”
Public Reaction and Reflection
The TikTok clip has amassed over 3 million views, with many commenters expressing concern. “That’s terrifying,” one wrote, while another added: “Now why would we even do that?” A third referenced characters from the British soap opera EastEnders, Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell, who died after drowning in a swimming pool.
Speaking to People, Shelby admitted the adrenaline of the day clouded their judgment. “The adrenaline of the day just got to us. We were excited and not thinking clearly,” she said. She also confessed, “I never understood why people did stupid or dangerous things to go viral.” She now advises brides to change outfits before jumping into a pool, emphasizing that no viral moment is worth risking a loved one’s life.
Historical Precedents
Shelby revealed she has since learned that people have died from similar stunts. In 2012, bride Maria Pantazopoulos drowned in the Ouareau River near Montreal, Canada, during a post-wedding photoshoot, as reported by the BBC. Shelby’s story serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of chasing online fame.
