Cottage Cheese Craze Sweeps Britain as TikTok Drives 200% Sales Surge
Cottage Cheese Craze: TikTok Drives 200% Sales Surge in UK

Cottage Cheese Sales Soar by 200% as TikTok Fuels National Obsession

Britain has embraced a cottage cheese frenzy, with new data revealing an unprecedented surge in demand for the high-protein dairy product. At Tesco, sales have rocketed by an astonishing 200% over the past two years, driven largely by a viral resurgence on social media platform TikTok.

TikTok Trends Spark Culinary Revolution

Elizabeth Tomkins, Tesco's cottage cheese buyer, explained the phenomenon: 'TikTok food trends often result in sudden sales spikes, as we saw previously with Italian bread and cheese. However, this represents a fully-fledged culinary revolution that has generated substantial additional revenue for the UK dairy sector.'

The trend shows no signs of slowing, with influencers and celebrities enthusiastically sharing their cottage cheese creations. Zoe Rae, sister of reality star Molly Mae Hague, recently confessed in a viral video: 'I'm cottage cheese obsessed. I'm consuming tubs as if they're going out of style.'

Creative recipes have proliferated across social media. TikTok creator @cookingwithnoa experimented with hot honey cottage cheese, declaring it the 'new avocado.' Meanwhile, Olivia Jarvis (@oliviajarviss) innovated by using cottage cheese as a pizza base, adding protein to her favourite indulgence.

Historical Resurgence with Modern Twist

Originally created in 1831, cottage cheese gained popularity among dieters during the 1970s and 1980s as a low-fat filling for baked potatoes and avocados. 'Demand remained steady for decades, typically peaking in summer months and January due to post-Christmas dieting,' Ms Tomkins noted.

However, the current explosion differs dramatically. 'Now that younger consumers have embraced it, we're ordering maximum supplies to meet record-breaking demand,' she added.

Dairy Industry Transformed

The impact on dairy producers has been profound. Robert Graham of Grahams The Family Dairy revealed: 'The demand has been staggering. Our cottage cheese business now exceeds our milk operations, which originally formed the foundation of our dairy farm.'

Graham first noticed the trend emerging around May 2023, but sales have since accelerated exponentially. 'We've gone into overdrive to satisfy demand. This global phenomenon has led to exports reaching distant markets including the Gulf States and Hong Kong.'

Consumer choice has expanded significantly. Where shoppers once selected from one or two brands, dozens of options now exist from producers including Arla, Longley Farm, and Graham's The Family Dairy.

Nutritional Powerhouse Gains Superfood Status

Nutrition experts have championed cottage cheese as a dietary superstar. Registered Dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, author of How Not To Eat Over Processed, told the Daily Mail: 'Cottage cheese delivers nutrient density with high-quality protein, bone-strengthening calcium, thyroid-supporting iodine, and energy-boosting B vitamins. It provides substantial protein relative to its calorie content.'

Typically containing 11-13g of protein per 100g, a standard 200g serving offers 22-26g of protein, comparable to many protein yoghurts.

Nutritionist Rob Hobson, author of Unprocess Your Life, highlighted additional benefits: 'The casein protein in cottage cheese digests slowly, promoting prolonged satiety. It makes an excellent evening snack paired with fruit or wholemeal crackers.'

Culinary Innovation Knows No Bounds

Health-conscious influencers have pushed creative boundaries, incorporating cottage cheese into everything from classic meals to desserts. Chef and New York Times bestselling author Jake Cohen shared a cookie dough recipe featuring cottage cheese in May.

Other innovators have baked seasoned cottage cheese to create crispy snacks. London-based TikToker @_cookwithmi experimented with cottage cheese lasagne, announcing: 'I'm joining the cottage cheese bandwagon, and this absolutely delivered. While I adore cheese sauce, this version offers a healthier alternative.'

With the trend accelerating just two months into the year, cottage cheese appears destined to become one of 2026's defining food movements, transforming from a nostalgic diet staple into a contemporary culinary sensation.
