Expert Shares Simple Trick to Banish Mould from Washing Machine

Cleaning a washing machine might seem unnecessary since it cleans clothes, but neglecting it can lead to odours, residue, and mould. Sarah Dempsey, a cleaning expert from MyJobQuote, has shared advice on keeping the appliance spotless.

She recommends running a hot wash cycle with specific cleaners like Calgon products. “Engineers have agreed that these are the very best to remove mould and bacteria from your entire washing machine system,” Dempsey said.

For a DIY approach, she suggests spraying white vinegar on the drum and wiping it with a cloth, or pouring vinegar into the detergent dispenser and running a hot cycle. This helps remove residues and hard water stains.

To prevent mould, Dempsey advises leaving the door slightly ajar when not in use, as well as the detergent drawer, to allow air circulation. If smells persist, she recommends checking the standpipe for dirty water or mould.
