Jet2 has issued a warning to passengers that bringing a specific type of supermarket item in hand luggage could result in extended security checks. The issue came to light after a traveller inquired about carrying meal replacement sachets on an upcoming flight.
Passenger Inquiry Sparks Warning
Andrea, a passenger with an upcoming Jet2 flight from the UK to Spain, took to social media to ask: "@Jet2tweets Hi, I'm flying from UK to Spain. Am I allowed to take sachets of slim shakes with me? I've read conflicting advice." Jet2 responded by asking whether she intended to carry the sachets in hand or hold luggage. After Andrea clarified that she would follow the airline's guidance, Jet2 advised that carrying the sachets in either bag should not be an issue, but warned that hand luggage may subject passengers to taste or test procedures at security.
Security Concerns with Powders
Most airports recommend packing food items and powders in hold luggage whenever possible. While generally permitted in hand luggage, these items can obscure X-ray images and may be mistaken for suspicious packages. Placing them in hold luggage minimises the need for additional checks. Passengers who must carry such items in hand luggage should allow extra time at security.
It is advisable to keep powders like protein powder, flour, and large makeup containers in original, sealed packaging and in checked luggage to avoid delays. The Gov.uk website states: "Food items and powders in your hand luggage can obstruct images on x-ray machines. Your bags may need to be checked again manually by security. You can put these items in your hold luggage to minimise delays."
International Restrictions
Certain countries have strict policies on food and powders. Heathrow Airport notes that for flights to the US, restrictions apply to powders over 350ml or 350g, which are prohibited from cabin carriage. Medical powders like medicines, baby powders, and human ashes are still permitted but subject to additional checks. Passengers are advised to keep items in original packaging with seals intact and, where appropriate, carry proof of authenticity such as a prescription. Powders purchased in duty free may be carried if packaged in a security tamper evident bag with a receipt proving airside purchase.
