McDonald's in Egypt: Woman Shocked by £8.09 Meal

A woman recently ordered a McDonald's while in Egypt and was left stunned by the price of her meal. Suzanna, known as Suzanna Travel Solo on TikTok, shared her experience after visiting a McDonald's in Hurghada, where she was taken aback by how affordable the food was compared to prices in her home country.

The Surprising Cost

In her video, Suzanna detailed what she purchased: a strawberry drink, four chicken nuggets with potato wedges instead of fries, a Big Mac with tasty sauce, a chicken sandwich, and a chicken wrap for the plane. The total came to just £8.09. She remarked, "All that was £8.09. The wedges with the sweet and sour sauce are lovely." She also claimed the food "tastes better" than McDonald's in her home country and is "a lot cheaper."

Comparison with UK Prices

To put this in perspective, a standard McChicken Sandwich in the UK costs between £4.19 and £5.29, depending on location. In Ireland, a standalone McChicken Sandwich is approximately €4.10, and a McCrispy is around €6.30. Suzanna's meal, which included multiple items, was significantly cheaper than a single sandwich in the UK.

Reasons for the Price Difference

Several factors explain why McDonald's is cheaper in Egypt. The country has a lower cost of living, with reduced labour costs, overheads like rent, and local ingredient sourcing. Additionally, the Egyptian Pound (EGP) is significantly undervalued compared to currencies like the British pound and euro. When converted to stronger currencies, meals in Egypt appear incredibly affordable to tourists.

However, for the average Egyptian worker, McDonald's may not be considered a cheap option. The chain has been approached for further comment.
