Single Mother's Extreme Budgeting Cuts Weekly Food Bill to £70 and Sheds Four Stone

Charlene Woracker, a 34-year-old single mother from Sheffield, has made remarkable changes to her lifestyle since becoming the sole provider for her four children in 2023. Through what she describes as 'drastic changes,' Charlene has managed to slash her weekly grocery bill to just £70 for her family of five while simultaneously losing an impressive four stone in weight.

Transforming Lifestyle Through Frugal Choices

Faced with financial pressures as a single parent, Charlene took immediate action by cancelling non-essential subscriptions including her gym membership and Spotify account. She began preparing all meals from scratch, cutting her own hair, doing her own nails, and implementing batch cooking techniques. Her commitment extends to stockpiling essential items every six months and purchasing all her children's clothing from second-hand shops.

'When I became a single mum I knew I had to make a change quickly,' Charlene explained. 'I was so worried about money. Now I just plan in advance and love helping others – I would say you're not alone and everyone has some kind of money worry.'

Strategic Shopping and Meal Planning

After realizing she was spending £200 weekly on groceries, Charlene began strategically comparing prices across different supermarkets and hunting for the best deals. By maximizing buy-one-get-one-free offers and focusing on staple meals, she reduced her food expenditure by 65%.

'On a Sunday, we have a Sunday roast and then in the week we have spaghetti bolognese, fajitas, and then just something relatively easy, like pizzas,' she detailed. 'Especially if you're making the dough from scratch, it can be very cheap.'

Her family grows their own herbs and potatoes, and she prepares homemade granola using seeds, nuts and oats for breakfast, paired with affordable apples and supermarket own-brand yoghurt. Lunches typically consist of beans on toast or jacket potatoes with beans using non-branded products.

Health Transformation Through Home Exercise

The financial changes brought unexpected health benefits. By exercising at home using YouTube workout videos and a £10 exercise bike purchased from a charity shop, combined with cooking nutritious meals from scratch, Charlene lost four stone – dropping from 11 stone 7 pounds (73kg) to 7 stone 7 pounds (47.6kg).

From Personal Journey to Full-Time Career

While studying to become an accountant in 2023, Charlene began sharing her budgeting journey on TikTok under the handle @mummybudgets. Within a year, her content had gained such traction that she turned it into a full-time career, now boasting over 38,000 followers.

Her viral videos include one showing Christmas presents for her children that received over three million views in December 2023, and another demonstrating how to prepare a Christmas dinner for just £10 that garnered more than two million views.

'That spread quite quickly – people were really shocked how little you can spend on a Christmas dinner,' she said. 'There were some people saying that you should really be spending more because it's a special occasion, but generally, I think it changed people's perspective on how they see Christmas.'

Comprehensive Cost-Cutting Strategies

Charlene's budgeting extends beyond food. Every six months, she spends £300 stockpiling dry, long-lasting foods like oil, salt, and pasta when they're on special offer. 'You'd be surprised how much it does reduce the cost of your shop,' she noted.

For clothing, she prioritizes quality over quantity, searching for durable pieces at reasonable prices in second-hand shops, where she has found Adidas T-shirts for just 50p in bargain bins.

Family entertainment focuses on free activities like visiting parks, museums, and historic buildings. She hosts film nights at home using DVDs from charity shops and homemade popcorn, noting that a cinema trip for five could 'easily' exceed £50.

Teaching Financial Literacy to Children

Charlene hopes her children – aged two, eight, 14 and 16 – will grow up confident with money management. 'I do teach them not to be wasteful with money and to use it wisely,' she said. 'My younger kids have Monzo cards for their pocket money, and it really teaches them how to manage money at a really young age.'

Her monthly expenses include £150 for electricity (with appliances always turned off at the switch), £10 for her phone SIM, and £40 on petrol. She buys gifts in advance during sales periods to avoid large, unexpected expenses.

Advice for Others Seeking to Reduce Costs

For those looking to cut their own expenses, Charlene advises: 'Start by looking at your income and outgoings and cut as many subscriptions as possible. Planning in advance is the most important thing, and don't be afraid to talk about it.'

'It gives me so much joy to help others,' she added, reflecting on her journey from financial worry to becoming a source of inspiration for thousands facing similar challenges.
