Paw Patrol Toy Recalled Over Asbestos Health Risk

Urgent Recall Issued for Paw Patrol Sand Art Kit Over Asbestos Contamination

A popular children's toy featuring characters from the animated series Paw Patrol has been urgently recalled after tests revealed the play sand may be contaminated with asbestos, presenting a significant health risk. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued a stark warning, stating the product fails to meet UK toy safety regulations.

Retailers and Product Details

The affected item is the Paw Patrol Sand Art Pictures Kit, manufactured by Addo Play Limited. It was widely available for purchase between September 2024 and February 2026 through several major retailers, including:

  • The Entertainer
  • Tesco
  • Marks & Spencer (M&S)
  • Hobbycraft
  • British Garden Centres

The kit typically contains multiple colours of play sand and plastic bottles for creating art. The product carries the item code 320-14142-N, with an additional code T553666 for items purchased from M&S.

Health Risks and Official Statements

The OPSS has emphasised that asbestos is a banned substance in the UK due to its well-documented health hazards, which can occur even at low levels of exposure. The regulatory body confirmed the product "does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011."

Addo Play Limited has initiated the recall. The Entertainer, a primary retailer, stated that while the overall risk is considered low, "asbestos should not be present in any amount," necessitating the immediate recall. They have advised customers to cease using the product and keep it away from children.

Consumer Actions and Refund Procedures

Customers who have purchased the kit are instructed to stop using it immediately. Retailers have outlined specific refund processes:

  • M&S has removed the product from sale online and in-store. For online purchases, they will automatically issue a £5 redemption code. They advise customers not to return the item to stores but to dispose of it as directed.
  • The Entertainer can be contacted for refunds via email at Product.Recall@theentertainer.com or by phone at +44 808 501 3005.

All retailers are offering full refunds upon proof of purchase following proper disposal.

Critical Disposal Instructions

The OPSS has issued detailed safety protocols for disposing of the contaminated sand:

  1. If the sand is unopened: Place the entire package in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely with double tape, label it clearly, and store it in a secure location inaccessible to children.
  2. If the sand has been used: Clean all affected areas using wet cloths to prevent dust generation. Wear protective gloves and a mask during cleanup. Double-bag all contaminated materials, including the sand, used cloths, gloves, and mask.

It is crucial to keep children and others away from areas where the sand was used until thorough cleaning is complete. After following these steps, dispose of the bagged materials with general household waste and then contact the retailer for a refund.

This recall highlights ongoing concerns about product safety and supply chain oversight in the children's toy market, urging heightened vigilance among consumers and regulators alike.
