Galentine's Day Surge: Platonic Valentine's Cards Jump 30% as Friendships Take Centre Stage
Platonic Valentine's Cards Surge 30% as Friendships Gain Focus

New data has uncovered a remarkable boom in the sending of platonic Valentine's cards to friends and family, marking a significant cultural shift away from exclusively romantic celebrations on February 14th. Research conducted by the prominent card and gift retailer Moonpig indicates a substantial 30% increase in what is being termed 'platonic love post' over the past year alone.

The Rise of Friendship-Focused Celebrations

This surge in non-romantic sentiment is not merely a minor trend but represents a broader national movement towards valuing and honouring support networks. According to the findings, friends now receive almost one in five, specifically 16%, of all Valentine's Day orders placed through Moonpig. This demonstrates a clear departure from traditional romantic expectations surrounding the holiday.

Generational Drivers Behind the Trend

The movement is being propelled predominantly by younger generations, with a comprehensive poll of 2,000 adults revealing that three in every ten members of Generation Z are more likely to celebrate Valentine's Day with a friend rather than a romantic partner this year. Furthermore, 18% of all adults surveyed stated they are just as inclined to celebrate Galentine's Day, which honours female friendships on February 13th, as they are the conventional Valentine's Day.

In response to this growing 'mates before dates' cheerleading movement, Moonpig is launching a special initiative to encourage the celebration of platonic relationships. The company is inviting everyone across the United Kingdom to send a complimentary love note to anyone except a romantic partner using the promotional code LOVEYA, which will be active from February 9th through February 12th.

Insights from Moonpig's Spokesperson

Rachael Halliday, a spokesperson for Moonpig, commented on the findings, stating, "It's evident that expressing 'I love you' is no longer reserved solely for those in romantic relationships. Our research has clearly shown that our support networks and our mates are today's genuine 'love affairs.' Consequently, we are providing everyone with the opportunity to celebrate those individuals who hold us up, support us, and keep us going throughout the entire year this February."

The Strength of Female Friendships Revealed

The data further illuminates the particular strength of female friendships, revealing that 34% of women have at least one friend they could call in the middle of the night during an emergency, compared to just 22% of men. Additionally, 25% of women maintain contact with at least one friend from primary school, versus 18% of men. These intimate circles typically consist of three people, a number that rises to four for the more widely connected Generation Z individuals.

While older generations often sustain bonds with friends from secondary school, at 34%, or past employment, at 31%, younger women are establishing connections through diverse avenues. Notably, 13% have formed lifelong friendships through social media platforms, with others meeting enduring pals while travelling, at 10%, or at festivals, at 7%.

Popular Platonic Love Gestures

When it comes to demonstrating appreciation within these friendships, the most favoured platonic love gestures include sending regular check-in messages, favoured by 51% of respondents, celebrating even minor milestones, chosen by 30%, and surprising friends with treats like a coffee, selected by 26%.

Rachael Halliday from Moonpig added further insight, saying, "Whether they are your 'ride or die' companion, your drinking buddy, your eyebrow specialist, or your parenting guru, you can show that non-romantic special someone how much you care about them during this Valentine's week. Whoever it is you rely on most in the world, who brings a smile to your face on your darkest days, who makes you laugh heartily as if you were children again—now is the time to demonstrate how profoundly they mean to you."

This comprehensive research underscores a transformative shift in how Valentine's Day is perceived and celebrated across the United Kingdom, with platonic relationships gaining unprecedented recognition and appreciation during the traditional season of romance.
