John Lewis Partnership Announces Significant Pay Increase for 65,000 Employees
Around 65,000 workers at the John Lewis Partnership are set to receive a substantial pay rise in April, with shop floor pay increasing by nearly 7%. This equates to an additional £1,600 annually for full-time employees, as confirmed by the retail giant. The partnership, which encompasses John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, emphasised that this move is part of a broader commitment to supporting its staff, known as partners due to the employee-owned structure of the business.
Bonus Decision Delayed Until March Amid Financial Pressures
However, the announcement comes with uncertainty regarding the annual partner bonus, which has not been paid since 2022. A spokesperson clarified that the pay rise is unrelated to the bonus decision, which will be finalised by the Board in March. Jason Tarry, the partnership’s chair, stated, “We are committed to paying a bonus as soon as we possibly can.” This delay reflects the ongoing financial struggles faced by the group, which reported losses of £88 million for the six months to July, nearly triple the previous year’s figure, attributed to restructuring costs and new tax charges.
Detailed Breakdown of Pay Increases and Benefits
The pay rise, totalling £108 million, will benefit 99.6% of partners. From April 1, minimum hourly rates will rise to £13.25 across the UK, with an increase to £14.80 for stores within the M25. For partners in enhanced or specialist roles, rates will reach £14.31 per hour, rising to £15.98 within the M25. These adjustments partly align with the upcoming increase in the statutory National Living Wage, which will rise by 4.1% to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and over.
Helen Webb, chief people officer for the John Lewis Partnership, commented, “Our Partners are the heartbeat of our business. This £108m investment is about putting more money into their pockets month-in, month-out. This pay growth demonstrates a sustained commitment to Partner pay, consistent with previous years.” She added that this ensures rewards are integrated into monthly pay as the partnership invests in its future.
Additional Perks and Financial Context
In addition to the pay rise, partners enjoy a range of benefits, including discounts at John Lewis and Waitrose, up to a 12% pension contribution, subsidised hotel rates, up to £275 for personal development and leisure activities, subsidised meals, and comprehensive health and wellbeing support. The partnership operates 36 department stores and over 300 Waitrose supermarkets, but has faced significant challenges in recent years, with heavy losses prompting a turnaround plan under leadership including managing director Peter Ruis.
The pay increase is seen as a positive step for employees, yet the unresolved bonus issue highlights the broader financial pressures within the retail sector. As the partnership navigates these challenges, the focus remains on balancing employee welfare with sustainable business practices.
