Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh has shared his top tip for protecting tomato plants from pests without using harsh chemicals. In a video on his YouTube channel, he recommends planting French marigolds alongside tomatoes to naturally deter whiteflies through companion planting.
Why Tomatoes Are Vulnerable
Tomato plants are particularly susceptible to pests such as aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Whiteflies are especially damaging as they drain sap from leaves and stems, causing leaves to yellow, curl, and eventually fall off. Keeping these pests at bay can be challenging, especially for those who prefer to avoid chemical sprays.
The Power of Companion Planting
Companion planting involves growing different plants together for mutual benefit. This practice enhances plant health, reduces pest problems, attracts beneficial insects, and boosts yields without chemicals. While tomatoes should not be planted near potatoes, brassicas, or sweetcorn, Titchmarsh highlights one plant that is particularly beneficial: marigolds.
French Marigolds: A Natural Pest Repellent
In his video, Titchmarsh explains that marigolds attract pollinators with their nectar and pollen, but they are especially effective when planted with tomatoes. French marigolds emit a strong, pungent scent from their roots, which deters whiteflies. He notes, "The root exudate is so strong it puts off the whitefly." When the aromatic roots mingle with tomato roots, they help repel the pests.
Marigolds can be planted in the same grow bag, pot, or soil as tomatoes, adding vibrant color to the garden throughout summer. Basil is another excellent companion for tomatoes, attracting pollinators and maximizing garden space.
