British Gas Engineer Shares Simple Fix for Common Boiler Problem

British Gas is reporting a surge in callouts from homeowners experiencing low boiler pressure, driven by fluctuating temperatures leaving some households without heating or hot water. The energy firm expects around 35,000 customers across the UK to need boiler support this week, with low pressure one of the most common winter faults.

This issue often occurs after radiators have been bled or where there is a small leak in the system, but many cases can be resolved quickly with simple checks at home. To help households get back up and running quickly, British Gas engineer Ella Teakle shares practical advice on what to do if boiler pressure drops, including how to safely check and repressurise systems.

Last winter, more than 1.2 million customers called on British Gas engineers to fix broken boilers and restore heating and hot water. Ella Teakle, a service and repair engineer at British Gas, said: “With temperatures fluctuating, we’re seeing a big increase in low boiler pressure issues, which can cause heating or hot water to stop working. If your heating or hot water suddenly stops working, don’t panic. Checking the pressure gauge is a good first step and, in many cases, it can be an easy fix. But if you’re not confident carrying out checks yourself, it’s always best to call an expert.”
