EDF Sunday Saver Challenge: Deadline Approaching for Free Electricity

EDF has revived its 'Sunday Saver Challenge' for October, offering customers free electricity on Sundays. However, those wishing to participate must register by 11:59 pm on Sunday, October 12, as the scheme officially begins on Monday, October 13.

The programme rewards customers who shift their electricity usage away from peak weekday hours (4pm-7pm). By doing so, participants can earn between four and 16 hours of complimentary electricity the following Sunday. Since its launch in September 2023, 88% of participants have secured at least four hours of free electricity, with over £2.73 million returned to customer accounts.

Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, said: “With the new price cap level coming into effect seeing the average annual energy bill rising by two per cent from October 1, we’re continuing to provide great value through our Sunday Saver challenge.” The Ofgem price cap increase means typical dual-fuel households paying by Direct Debit will now pay £1,755 per year.

To qualify, customers need a functioning smart meter with half-hourly readings. The North East of England led participation in 2024, with 89.39% of customers earning up to 16 hours of free electricity, followed by the Midlands (88.76%) and Scotland (88.45%). EDF suggests simple changes like charging devices outside peak times or using the dishwasher in the morning to earn free electricity.
