Record £6.1 Billion Paid Out in UK Property Claims During 2025
Insurers across the United Kingdom disbursed a staggering £6.1 billion in property claims throughout 2025, marking the highest annual total since records began in 2017. This unprecedented figure was driven significantly by a surge in adverse weather events, according to the latest data released by the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Weather-Related Claims Surge to £1.2 Billion
Across the entire year, insurers paid out £1.2 billion specifically for weather-related property claims. This represents a substantial 14% increase, equivalent to £142 million, compared to the total recorded in 2024. Of this significant sum, claims for weather damage to residential homes and personal possessions accounted for £758 million.
Storm damage claims alone reached £244 million in 2025, a sharp 32% rise (£59 million) from the previous year. The average payout for storm damage climbed to £2,450 per claim, which is £750 higher than the average recorded in 2024.
Flood Payouts Experience Dramatic 60% Increase
Perhaps most strikingly, the average flood payout to homeowners surged by a remarkable 60%, reaching £30,000. This sharp increase underscores the severe financial impact flooding events are having on households across the nation.
Subsidence Claims Also Reach Record Levels
Extreme weather conditions are also having a pronounced effect on subsidence claims, according to the ABI. Domestic subsidence payouts increased to £307 million, reflecting a 10% annual rise of £27 million. This figure represents the highest level ever recorded in the ABI's historical data.
Insurance Premiums Show Slight Decrease
Despite the record claim payouts, the ABI's latest figures reveal that the average price paid for combined building and contents home insurance in the fourth quarter of 2025 was £379. This represents a decrease of £14 compared to the same period in 2024.
Industry Response to the Record Figures
Chris Bose, Director of General Insurance Policy at the ABI, commented on the findings: "Once again, we are witnessing the considerable toll that increasingly severe weather is taking on homes and businesses throughout the United Kingdom. A record £6.1 billion in property claims last year demonstrates both the scale of the damage inflicted and the vital role insurers play in helping individuals and communities recover from these devastating events."
The data highlights a clear trend of escalating weather-related property damage costs in the UK, with insurers facing mounting claims from storms, floods, and subsidence. The record-breaking figures for 2025 suggest that both homeowners and the insurance industry must continue to adapt to the challenges posed by a changing climate and more frequent extreme weather patterns.
