A devastating incident has highlighted critical safety concerns in residential buildings after a young man fell to his death when balcony railings allegedly gave way. Joshua Robbins, aged 23, was looking over the railing of a fifth-floor communal balcony outside his flat in Holborn, London, to check if a pizza delivery had arrived. According to his mother, Fiona Garrett, the railings suddenly failed, sending him plunging five floors to his death on January 29 at approximately 8:20 PM.
Mother's Campaign for Justice and Safety
Fiona Garrett, a 46-year-old mother originally from Essex but living in Claudy, Co Londonderry, has launched the "no more falls" campaign in honour of her son. She is urging all residents of high-rise buildings to demand that landlords conduct thorough safety inspections of balcony railings. "We should not be planning a cremation. We should not be waiting for pathology reports," she told MyLondon. "We are seeking answers not only for Josh, but so that no other family ever has to endure this pain. Not one more."
The family is also running a fundraiser to cover legal representation and the financial implications of Josh's unexpected death. Ms Garrett is demanding answers from the Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), which manages the property at Thurston Dwellings on Newton Street.
Political Response and Ongoing Investigations
In her pursuit of justice, Ms Garrett emailed her son's local MP, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, requesting a meeting. She received a prompt and genuine response, with Sir Keir handwriting "My thoughts are with you" and assuring that inquiries "have been made and we will continue to do all we can to help you get answers." No meeting has been scheduled yet, and an inquest date remains pending as investigations continue.
Ms Garrett expressed fears that accountability might be evaded, drawing parallels to the Grenfell Tower tragedy. "I just worry that it'll be a bit like Grenfell, they'll start passing the buck," she said. Driven by "adrenaline and rage," she is determined to uncover all circumstances surrounding her son's death.

Paying tribute to her son, Ms Garrett described Joshua as "deeply loved. He was gentle, kind, and quietly thoughtful — the sort of young man who made people feel valued in his company. He had plans and hopes for the future. Our lives have been irrevocably changed by his death."

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they were called to Newton Street at 20:19 hours on January 29, where a 23-year-old man was treated by the London Ambulance Service but pronounced dead at the scene.
