From Hollywood Glamour to Sicilian Serenity
A dramatic transition from the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles to a tranquil Sicilian town might appear an unconventional choice for a career-focused 28-year-old professional. Yet for Kiki Leigh, this bold relocation represents the most rewarding decision of her life. After fifteen years immersed in LA's fast-paced environment, Leigh felt an undeniable urge for profound change, ultimately leading her to settle in a community of just 10,000 residents where English is scarcely spoken.
The Spark of Inspiration
Leigh began contemplating a major life shift in 2024, experiencing growing restlessness within her established routine. 'I was living "a successful life,"' she confessed to the Daily Mail. 'But I wasn't really feeling fulfilled, and I was honestly burnt out and drained.' Working in public relations within the fashion industry, Leigh acknowledged that while her career trajectory seemed perfect on paper, a deeper sense of purpose was missing.
The catalyst emerged unexpectedly through social media. 'I saw this woman saying she [bought] this dilapidated house in Italy for 60,000 euros - it was a humongous house, beautiful, and it's historic,' Leigh recalled from a TikTok video. This discovery prompted her to research Italy's renowned one euro house scheme, an innovative initiative launched in 2017 to combat rural depopulation by selling abandoned properties for symbolic sums, requiring buyers to undertake renovations within set timeframes.
The Sicilian Quest
Within a fortnight of viewing the viral clip, Leigh booked a exploratory trip to Sicily, a region she had visited previously and adored. 'I love Italy as a whole, and I thought, "Maybe this is what I'm looking for,"' she explained. Upon arrival, she found herself particularly drawn to Mussomeli, one of the small towns participating in the regeneration program. Touring between thirty and forty properties solidified her determination to purchase a home.
'I was like, "Yeah, I definitely want to do this,"' she remembered. Her initial offer on one house was rejected, but merely fifteen minutes later, her real estate agent called back with triumphant news: Leigh had secured her dream home for 27,000 euros (approximately $32,000). Although this particular property wasn't part of the official one-euro scheme, its charm proved irresistible.
Medieval Marvel and Renovation Realities
The acquired residence is a staggering 4,300 square foot structure boasting seventeen rooms, with architectural origins dating back approximately six centuries. 'It was like a really beautiful house,' Leigh described. 'Kind of like a dream come true.' The purchasing process required seven months to finalize, involving a ten percent deposit upon offer acceptance with the remaining balance settled at closing approximately six months later.
Leigh returned to Sicily in late January 2025 to commence construction in February, allocating a renovation budget between 100,000 and 150,000 euros ($118,000 to $178,000). She managed financial transactions conveniently through the international money transfer service Wise, eliminating the need to open a local Italian bank account. The renovation project is scheduled for completion by June.
Embracing Community and Future Plans
While acknowledging the stresses of transitioning from chaotic LA life to managing a renovation in a non-English speaking country, Leigh finds solace in the tangible outcome awaiting her. 'I've just completely fallen in love with the town and the people, which I never expected in the beginning,' she revealed. 'My social life there is more full than it ever was in LA. The community is so welcoming.'
Previously paying $2,750 to $3,000 monthly for rented apartments in West Hollywood and Koreatown, Leigh eagerly anticipates utilizing her expansive new home for hosting gatherings, incorporating dream features like a private spa and bar. She has since learned Italian and plans full-time residency, currently visiting on tourist visas while pursuing EU citizenship through her Irish nationality.
Looking ahead, Leigh hopes to establish a local business in Mussomeli, potentially focusing on olive oil production or a community-serving store. 'My plan is to use the home as a private residence and be there pretty much full time,' she stated, envisioning hosting family and friends in her beloved Sicilian sanctuary.
