Trump's Turnberry Golf Course to Receive Major Security Enhancement with New Surveillance Room
Former US President Donald Trump has been granted permission to significantly bolster security at his Turnberry golf resort in Ayrshire, Scotland. The 79-year-old property mogul-turned-politician plans to transform a lounge within an outbuilding, known as the Gatehouse, into a dedicated high-tech surveillance bunker. This move follows a series of disruptive incidents at the prestigious venue last year.
Approved Plans for Security Overhaul
According to documents submitted to South Ayrshire Council, the proposed security room will include designated desk spaces, a toilet, and a cloakroom area. Additionally, the resort will replace windows and doors and construct a new external accessible ramp to improve functionality. The Gatehouse, currently utilized for staff accommodation, will undergo refurbishment of its other rooms, including a kitchen, lounge, and bedroom, as part of the broader upgrade.
A planning report supporting the application stated: "It is determined that the proposed part change of use of the property, as well as the proposed alterations to the building's exterior and sub-division of the existing property shall be acceptable." The report emphasized that the changes are limited in scale, contained within the existing structure, and serve an ancillary function to the overall operations of the Turnberry Resort.
Background and Security Incidents
This security enhancement comes in response to a protest incident in March of last year, where activists dug up one green, painted 'Gaza is not for sale' on another, and daubed red paint across the clubhouse walls. In the aftermath, Turnberry management conducted a comprehensive security review in collaboration with officers from Police Scotland to address vulnerabilities.
Trump, who acquired Turnberry in 2013, has already implemented initial security measures, including the installation of gates at various locations around the course, approved last year. The resort now has a three-year window to complete the latest upgrades, ensuring ongoing protection for the property.

Donald Trump last visited Turnberry in July of the previous year as part of a trip to Scotland, where he played golf before proceeding to his Aberdeen resort to inaugurate a new links course. Reflecting on his ties to the region, Trump remarked to reporters: "My mother was born in Scotland, and it's an incredible place, a beautiful place." This personal connection underscores his commitment to maintaining and securing his Scottish assets.
The approved plans highlight that the exterior alterations will be consistent with the original design of the property and sympathetic to the visual character of the surrounding area, balancing security needs with aesthetic preservation.
