DPD Warns Customers Not to Reuse Cardboard Boxes

DPD customers are being urged not to reuse cardboard boxes when sending parcels, as the delivery service warns that the strength of cartons diminishes significantly after initial use. The guidance, published on DPD's website, emphasises the importance of selecting strong, rigid packaging to ensure items reach their destination safely.

Why Reusing Boxes Is Discouraged

According to DPD, reusing a carton more than once compromises its protective qualities. The company states: "Avoid using a carton more than once as its strength, and therefore the protection it offers, is significantly reduced when used multiple times." This advice applies to all types of parcels sent through the network.

Choosing the Right Box

To select a reliable carton, DPD advises customers to check that the box does not fold or bend under the weight of its contents. The company explains: "Use good quality carton boxes that are strong and rigid. If the box bends or folds due to the weight of the contents it is not suitable. Ideally, for heavy loads, you should use carton boxes made of high-quality corrugated cardboard. These should preferably be double-walled to ensure strength, durability and protection."

Avoid Underfilling and Seal Properly

Equally important is not to underfill boxes. DPD notes that underfilled boxes are more likely to collapse during transit. All cartons should be sealed securely using shipping staples or strong tape. The company's website states: "To ensure a smooth journey through our sortation hubs and network, it is important the packaging is suitable for our operation. This may vary depending on the contents of your parcel."

Manufacturer Packaging Not Enough

DPD also warns that manufacturer or product packaging alone is generally insufficient for courier transportation. "Choosing the right packaging is the first step to ensuring your items will reach their destination in good condition," the guidance reads. "You should take into consideration the weight and the type of contents within your parcel. Manufacturer packaging or product packaging alone is generally not sufficient for courier transportation as it does not provide enough protection."

Similar Advice from Parcelforce

Parcelforce offers comparable guidance. In its packaging guidelines, the service states: "A corrugated cardboard box with a quality outer wrapping is best. Make sure the outer packaging is strong enough for the weight of the parcel. Items packed in kraft paper cannot be sent via our global express service. Please avoid reusing cardboard boxes because they weaken considerably after initial use."

Avoid Materials That Stick to Sorting Equipment

Parcelforce also advises against using materials that could adhere to sorting machinery. The guidance explains: "To avoid delays or issues, do not use materials that stick to our sorting equipment, such as cling film, bubble wrap, string, or excessive tape." Customers are encouraged to check specific guidelines with their courier before sending any parcels.
