Aldi has once again secured its position as the cheapest supermarket in the UK, according to the latest price analysis conducted by the consumer champion Which? for February 2026. The study compared prices for a standard shopping list of 89 items, revealing that Aldi offered the lowest average cost at £161.56 across the month.
Price Comparison Details
Which? meticulously analysed prices for both branded and own-brand products, including staples such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter. Lidl followed closely behind Aldi, with its list priced at just £162.75, making it only £1.19 more expensive. Asda ranked third at £181.06, while Tesco with a Clubcard came in fourth at £181.58.
Larger Shopping List Analysis
For a more extensive shopping list of 225 items, Which? found that Tesco emerged as the cheapest option for Clubcard members, with a total cost of £580.35. This made it £3.97 cheaper than Asda, which amounted to £584.32. However, without a Clubcard, Tesco's prices increased significantly to £629.25, an additional £48.90. Aldi and Lidl were not included in this larger comparison due to their smaller product ranges compared to other supermarkets.
Waitrose was identified as the most expensive supermarket on average for both shopping lists. For the 225-item list, Waitrose cost £650.11, which is £69.76 more than Tesco with a Clubcard. For the smaller 89-item list, Waitrose averaged £217.02, resulting in a substantial difference of £55.46 compared to Aldi.
Expert Insights and Consumer Advice
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on the findings, stating, "Aldi has taken the top spot this month, but the fierce battle between the discounters means Lidl also remains a fantastic option for those looking to slash their grocery bills." She added, "Tesco's Clubcard offers solid value for lovers of branded products, but these savings should be more widely accessible and we look forward to Tesco widening access later this year."
Sewraz emphasised the importance of strategic shopping, noting, "With budgets still under immense pressure, our analysis shows that being picky about where you shop can put hundreds of pounds back in your pocket over the year." The analysis included special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable, but excluded multibuys to provide a clear comparison.
