Asda's 96p own-label mayonnaise has beaten Hellmann's and five other supermarket brands in a blind taste test conducted by journalist Mia O'Hare. The budget option scored a perfect 10/10, praised for its colour, creaminess and silky consistency.
How the Test Was Conducted
O'Hare compared seven mayonnaises: Aldi (95p), Asda (96p), Hellmann's (£2.75), Lidl (95p), Marks and Spencer (£1.20), Sainsbury's (89p) and Tesco (86p). Each was judged on taste, texture, appearance and value for money. The results surprised her, with the cheapest options outperforming the market leader.
Full Rankings and Ratings
7th place: Tesco (86p) — 2/10
O'Hare found Tesco's mayonnaise excessively vinegary, with the sharpness overwhelming all other flavours. She described it as 'not quite right' and placed it last.
6th place: Lidl (95p) — 3/10
Lidl's offering was the palest in colour and had a sour edge. While the creamy texture was pleasant, the overall flavour was lacking, making it disappointing.
5th place: Sainsbury's (89p) — 6/10
This was the thickest mayonnaise in the test, relatively pale but with agreeable strength and taste. O'Hare recommended it for dressing salads if you want a thick condiment.
4th place: Hellmann's (£2.75) — 8/10
The branded favourite earned high marks for its smooth texture and perfect balance of sweetness and tanginess. However, its premium price put it behind cheaper rivals.
3rd place: Aldi (95p) — 8/10
Aldi's mayonnaise tasted 'just the same as Hellmann's' according to O'Hare, offering the same creaminess and flavour harmony at a fraction of the cost.
2nd place: Marks and Spencer (£1.20) — 9/10
M&S took second place with its light and fluffy texture, distinct from the others but in a positive way. O'Hare praised its tang and creaminess, calling it the best option for those seeking a lighter mayonnaise.
1st place: Asda (96p) — 10/10
Asda's mayonnaise won top spot for its satisfying tang, silky consistency and perfect colour. O'Hare said it 'will have you reaching for chips to dip in' and noted it is considerably cheaper than Hellmann's, making it a clear winner.
Value for Money
The test highlights that budget options can outperform premium brands. Asda's 96p mayonnaise costs 65% less than Hellmann's £2.75 jar, yet scored higher in taste. Aldi's 95p version also matched Hellmann's score. O'Hare concluded that shoppers do not need to spend more for quality mayonnaise.
