A taste test has found that a supermarket own-brand ketchup can rival Heinz, but it divided one family. The test, conducted by BirminghamLive's Parenting and Lifestyle Editor Zoe Chamberlain, compared Heinz with ketchups from Tesco, Sainsbury's, M&S and Aldi.
Heinz Tomato Ketchup, costing £3 for 460g, received 5 out of 5 stars for its unmistakable flavour, strong aroma, and perfect texture. However, M&S Tomato Ketchup, at £1 for 495g, also scored top marks from the reviewer, who praised its thick, barbecue-like taste reminiscent of posh homemade sauce.
Despite the M&S ketchup being £2 cheaper than Heinz, it was not a hit with the rest of the family. Chamberlain noted that her children and husband disliked it, saying they would rather go without than eat it. Tesco's ketchup, at £1.10 for 555g, earned 4 stars for its tangy flavour, while Aldi's Bramwells ketchup (99p for 650g) scored 3 stars. Sainsbury's ketchup (90p for 460g) was deemed bland and received just 2 stars.
The test highlights how personal taste can vary widely, even within a household. Chamberlain concluded that while she would continue to buy Heinz for her family, the M&S option offers a significant saving for those who enjoy its unique flavour.
