The future of the world's largest Hooters site in Liverpool has been confirmed, with a new business preparing to open in the former restaurant at New Zealand House on Water Street. The Hooters restaurant and sports bar chain occupied the historic city centre building from November 2022 until it closed in January 2026.
Hooters' Turbulent Time in Liverpool
Hooters experienced a difficult period during its stay in Liverpool, including complaints from staff that tips and service charges were being retained by the company to pay bills. Following these challenges, the team behind the venue said a fresh start was needed.
Director Barry Morris took over the business after the original operator went into administration and confirmed the restaurant would close on Sunday, January 11. At the time, he said he planned to replace Hooters with a new, more inclusive concept while remaining involved with the site. Mr Morris said he wanted the venue to better reflect Liverpool’s people, culture and passion for sport and hospitality after what he described as a difficult year for the business. However, later that month he confirmed that neither his proposed concept nor any alternative plans would move forward.
New Venue: Tavern Co Social
The former Hooters site is now set to become Tavern Co Social, with posters appearing outside the building ahead of its launch. The new venue is promising a famous breakfast and brunch menu, alongside freshly brewed coffee, live sports and a family-friendly atmosphere.
Although the concept is new to Liverpool city centre, The Tavern Co is already well established on Smithdown Road. The restaurant has twice been named the UK’s Best Breakfast for its award-winning full English.
History of The Tavern Co
The Tavern Co was founded by Keith Gurney, who moved to Liverpool from the United States in 1986 after first visiting Europe with university friends on football scholarships. The business opened in 1990 as a small bar before growing into an award-winning restaurant over the past three decades.
The Smithdown Road premises were acquired by JSM Group, also known as Pub Invest Group, in September 2023. Following the takeover, the restaurant underwent a refurbishment before reopening under its new ownership.
