Manchester Kebab Joint Goes Fully Vegan for World Kebab Day, Offers Free Food
Manchester Kebab Joint Goes Vegan for World Kebab Day

Great British Doner, a restaurant and takeaway on Deansgate in Manchester city centre, has announced it will go fully vegan for one day only, offering free food to the first 20 customers and a 20% discount to everyone else.

What is the change?

On Friday, July 10, to mark World Kebab Day, Great British Doner will not serve any meat. All items on the menu, including boxes, wraps, and doners, will be vegan. The restaurant made the announcement on Instagram, stating: "In collaboration with @petauk we are turning the whole restaurant vegan for World Kebab Day! Free vegan doner for the first 20 customers, plus 20% off the entire menu all day. Available for one day only – 10th July at GBD Deansgate."

Background on the restaurant

When it opened, Great British Doner claimed to be the first restaurant in the UK to offer a vegan doner on a spit. However, this claim sparked an online dispute with a kebab shop in Brighton that said it had been offering a vegan doner since 2014. The restaurant acknowledged the criticism in a video shared on Instagram, where a staff member said: "We have got a lot of hate for this. And we have listened to your comments. But you know what we have done? We are going completely vegan for World Kebab Day."
