Wallasey pub The Ferry reopens after £230k refurb

The Ferry, a historic pub in Wallasey overlooking the River Mersey, has officially reopened after a £230,000 refurbishment. The venue, which offers prime views of the Liverpool skyline, a traditional menu, and a range of drinks, has been a daily draw for guests seeking to enjoy a meal or a drink with the beautiful riverside scenery.

Historic origins and recent investment

The pub was built around the 1820s by Captain John Askew, a former ferryman who named the surrounding Egremont area after his birthplace in Cumberland. It initially served as a house and cargo store before being recorded as a hotel by 1850. Throughout the late 19th century, it was a popular destination for families and Victorian day-trippers visiting the fine sands of the Wallasey coast.

The last major refurbishment was in October 2023, which included the installation of bi-fold doors to the ground-level restaurant area, opening it up for easy access to the restaurant and beer garden. The latest investment, from Punch Pubs & Co, has refreshed the venue while maintaining its character and atmosphere.

Landlord Chris Stockton on the pub's success

Publican Chris Stockton, 63, from Barrow-in-Furness, has run the pub for eight years. He said: “It was important to keep the warm, friendly feel people know and love while giving the pub a fresh new look. The team is excited to be back and looking forward to the future.”

Stockton highlighted the location as the biggest selling point: “It is rammed every lunchtime and now we have been so busy with the weather. I built a makeshift beer garden during lockdown and that really put us on the map. Since then, customers just keep coming back.”

Refurbishment details and future plans

The work includes updates throughout, a refreshed bar, and a new kitchen. The first-floor dining room has also been improved, making it more suitable for private events and celebrations. The biggest changes have been made outside, where new planting and lighting have transformed the outdoor space. While the pub has a new look, the team remains the same.

With the reopening complete, Stockton and his team are now preparing for a busy summer, with a programme of events planned in the months ahead.
