AI Boom Escalates Storage Costs for PC Gamers
The relentless expansion of artificial intelligence is now directly impacting the affordability of PC gaming components, with hard disk drives (HDDs) experiencing significant price increases. This trend follows earlier reports of RAM cost surges driven by AI demand, which have already influenced gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 6.
Supply Shortages and Price Spikes
According to industry reports, major HDD manufacturers such as Western Digital are facing unprecedented demand from AI data centres, leading to a near-total sell-out for the 2026 calendar year. This shortage is rapidly translating into higher consumer prices. For instance, a 2TB Seagate HDD currently retails for approximately £96.19 on Amazon, a sharp rise from around £50 in October, as tracked by price monitoring services.
Similarly, a 2TB Western Digital model has seen its price soar to £102.50, marking a staggering 136% increase. These hikes are attributed to the massive storage requirements of AI operations, which are diverting supplies away from the consumer market.
Impact on Gaming and Alternative Storage
While HDDs are less commonly used in modern gaming devices due to the prevalence of faster solid-state drives (SSDs) in consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, they remain relevant for PC gamers storing large files or utilising home servers as cost-effective alternatives to cloud storage. The current price surge could therefore affect budget-conscious enthusiasts and those managing extensive digital libraries.
SSD Prices Also Under Pressure
The situation is not limited to HDDs; SSD prices are also climbing. A 2TB Crucial SSD, for example, has jumped from £110 in November to £179.99 as of January. This increase is partly due to shared components with RAM, both being high-speed storage solutions, and the likelihood of AI companies turning to SSDs as HDD inventories dwindle.
With manufacturers operating at full capacity and new production facilities not expected to alleviate shortages until 2028, the hardware market faces ongoing challenges. Gamers considering upgrades or new purchases may find current prices more favourable before potential further escalations.
