Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released as a digital-only title, with no physical copy available. The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among fans, particularly regarding pricing and the implications of a download-only release.
Pricing and Editions
The standard edition of GTA 6 is priced below the £100 mark that some had feared, with the Ultimate Edition costing £89.99. However, certain in-game content, including businesses and an apartment, will be exclusive to the Ultimate Edition, requiring players to pay extra if they want access. Reader Gaz Be Rotten expressed frustration, stating, "That's bad news for GTA fans and quite frustrating and disappointing." GameCentral noted that earlier in the week, many had braced for a £100 standard edition, but even the Ultimate Edition does not reach that price.
Another reader, David, who pre-ordered the Ultimate Edition, said, "I don't think both prices are bad... the only thing that worries me is in the details. It says single-player only and I'm just hoping that doesn't mean online is another charge." He added that he is excited but noted the 147-day wait until download day.
Download Size and Server Concerns
Fears about the download size and server capacity have been prominent. Alex warned that the game could be over 200GB, and with millions attempting to download simultaneously, server crashes or slowdowns are likely. "This problem will be exacerbated now that we know there's no physical copy to get a few GB off a disc," he said. He expects not to play until the new year at the earliest.
Michael Veal (@msv858) expressed annoyance, having bought a disc-drive PS5 to avoid large downloads. "Can the servers handle the traffic? ... With my internet connection, downloading might take ages. Having a physical edition that's just an empty box with a code is fundamentally rubbish."
Impact on Physical Media Enthusiasts
Simon, another reader, said the digital-only approach means he will not buy the game. "My internet isn't overly fast, so the thought of downloading a 100+ GB game means I'll never bother. I like buying physical so that I actually own the things I buy." He fears this move will accelerate the transition to digital-only, predicting the PlayStation 6 may lack a disc drive entirely.
Online and Single-Player Speculation
Reader Beems speculated that GTA 6's single-player mode might follow a linear structure similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, with chapter-timed content. He also questioned whether GTA Online will be included or require separate payment, and whether Vice City might become a downloadable expansion. "There haven't really been any substantial leaks about the gameplay or story," GameCentral responded.
Despite the backlash, many fans remain eager. As Gaz Be Rotten concluded, "Regardless, GTA 6 should be one hell of a game. I will be buying GTA 6, of course."
