In a bizarre incident that underscores the challenges of integrating autonomous technology into urban environments, an automated food delivery robot caused significant damage to a woman's garden in East Hollywood, Los Angeles, before making a swift escape. The event has raised serious questions about accountability and safety protocols for such devices.
Chaos in the Garden
Kaiya Reel was inside her home on Friday when she heard unusual noises emanating from her small, curbside garden, which she cultivates just outside her front gate. Upon investigating, she discovered a Coco delivery robot—a four-wheeled, sidewalk-traveling machine used for transporting food and groceries—had become entangled in her fence.
'It had got my fence caught up in its wheel. It uprooted a whole bunch of plates in my garden and then just drove away with the fence attached to it,' Reel recounted to local news outlet KTLA. The robot's actions resulted in the destruction of palm fronds and other plants, leaving a trail of debris along the pavement.
A Frustrating Pursuit
Reel immediately chased after the rogue robot, shouting for it to stop, a scene she described as making her look 'like a total crazy person.' Despite her efforts to block its path, the Coco bot adeptly maneuvered around her, showing no signs of slowing down as it dragged parts of her fence and garden materials, inadvertently whipping parked cars in the process.
Neighbor Roman Henson witnessed the commotion, noting they heard a crunching sound before seeing the robot drive through the fence. 'The robot had driven through the little fence and was dragging it,' Henson told KTLA. They added that such autonomous vehicles, including Cocos and Waymos, are increasingly common in the neighborhood and often behave unpredictably.
Broader Safety Issues
This incident is not isolated. Coco robots have been involved in previous mishaps, such as crashing into an ambulance and knocking over a parked motorcycle. In another case, a Coco robot abruptly halted in front of a man using a mobility scooter, causing a collision due to its erratic movements.
Reel expressed deep concern over these patterns, stating, 'I am worried that these companies can come in and dump their technology in our community and there’s no sense of accountability. It just feels like an accident waiting to happen.' Her remarks highlight growing public apprehension about the rapid deployment of autonomous delivery systems without robust safety measures.
Company Response and Reimbursement
Following the incident, Coco Robotics has agreed to reimburse Reel for the damage to her garden and has pledged to implement internal measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The company, which primarily operates in Los Angeles and Chicago, aims to address these safety gaps, though specific details of the new protocols have not been disclosed.
As autonomous technology becomes more prevalent, this event serves as a stark reminder of the need for stricter regulations and better oversight to protect communities from potential hazards posed by delivery robots.
