Victor Munoz reveals why he chose Liverpool over Newcastle United
Victor Munoz explains Liverpool move snubbing Newcastle

Victor Munoz has revealed that Liverpool's new manager Andoni Iraola was the decisive factor in his decision to reject Newcastle United and join the Reds. The 22-year-old Spain international's move came as a shock to Newcastle, who had already agreed a transfer fee with Osasuna, settled personal terms, and were preparing for his medical in the USA while Munoz represented Spain at the World Cup.

Munoz explains his decision

Munoz admitted the transfer happened quickly but emphasized Iraola's influence. "It's an opportunity you can't pass up," Munoz said. "He [Iraola] transmitted his confidence to me, the way his team plays… he played an important role in my decision." The winger had been earmarked as a replacement for Anthony Gordon at St James' Park, but Liverpool activated his release clause, prompting the switch to Merseyside.

World Cup injury setback

Since joining Liverpool, Munoz has been sidelined with a muscle injury that has prevented him from playing at the World Cup. After scoring on his debut for Spain against Serbia in March, he was expected to feature in the tournament but has missed matches against Cape Verde (0-0 draw) and Saudi Arabia (4-0 win). He is also set to miss the final Group H match against Uruguay.

"We were managing the injury, but I felt some discomfort again and we're trying to restart the process so I can get back on the pitch as soon as possible," Munoz explained. "These have been very difficult moments because this is a childhood dream and seeing it threatened by an injury is incredibly frustrating." He added that his teammates have been crucial in keeping him motivated: "My team-mates have been a fundamental pillar in making sure I wake up motivated every day."

Impact on Newcastle and Liverpool

Newcastle's disappointment was palpable as they lost a key target at the last minute. Liverpool, meanwhile, secured a promising talent who could be a long-term asset under Iraola. Munoz remains hopeful of recovering in time for the knockout stages of the World Cup, which would provide a timely boost for both club and country.
