Airbus has achieved a significant milestone in aviation history with the first test flight of its A350-1000ULR, an aircraft designed for ultra-long-haul routes that could set a new record for the world's longest non-stop commercial flight, lasting up to 22 hours.
First Test Flight Details
On Tuesday, June 2, the A350-1000ULR completed its maiden flight, departing from and returning to Toulouse, France. The flight lasted three hours and 43 minutes, reaching an altitude of over 41,000 feet (12,500 metres). The aircraft, designated MSN 707, was flown by an Airbus test crew and fitted with specialised instrumentation to monitor performance.
Ultra-Long-Range Capabilities
The "ULR" in A350-1000ULR stands for "ultra-long range." This variant of the A350-1000 features an extra fuel tank capable of holding 20,000 litres, extending the aircraft's range by more than 1,800 kilometres. This enhancement enables non-stop services between Sydney, Australia, and major cities such as London and New York, a distance of approximately 18,500 kilometres. In comparison, the current longest commercial flight is Singapore Airlines' Singapore to New York route, covering 15,350 kilometres in over 18 hours.
Airbus stated: "During the first flight, the crew carried out general performance checks on the aircraft and tested the new fuel system architecture. This marks the start of a two-month flight test campaign to certify the modifications." Further tests will evaluate cabin ventilation, temperature control, and a refrigeration system.
Qantas Sunrise Project
Australian airline Qantas has ordered the first 12 units of the A350-1000ULR, with the first delivery scheduled for April 2027. These aircraft will be part of Qantas' "Sunrise Project," named because passengers on the longest flights could witness two sunrises due to time zone differences. The Qantas configuration will feature reduced passenger numbers—from approximately 300 down to 238—along with a wellness area and Wi-Fi access.
Impact on Long-Haul Travel
This development marks a turning point for long-haul travel, potentially cutting journey times by up to four hours on routes like Sydney to London. The aircraft makes non-stop routes viable for the first time, offering greater convenience and efficiency for travellers.
Seat Swap Controversy
In related travel news, a flight attendant known as Ms Attendant Tea on TikTok addressed passengers who request seat swaps after boarding. She explained that weight and balance calculations are crucial for flight safety, and empty seats are factored into these calculations. She advised passengers to select their seats during booking or at the gate, rather than asking crew members for changes once onboard.
